The South West Model and Hobby Show

Well, we did it again!

According to our survey of some of the 10,000 visitors to the 2012 South West Model & Hobby Show it seems there’s only one word to describe the event and that’s “BRILLIANT”.

From dedicated modelling enthusiasts to mums and dads having a family day out with the kids, when asked if they would visit the show again next year the answer from everyone was an overwhelming “Yes, most definitely”.

And who can blame them?   This fantastic show once again brought together the very best in the world of model making, with more than 200 trade and club stands and a host of private exhibitors.

Visitors were enthralled by the daring loop the loop antics at the outdoor model aerial shows – and just as thrilled watching the dog fights in the indoor flying hall.  Of course, the fact that the displays were presented by some of the best flyers from around the UK made the experience extra special.

It almost goes without saying that most of us love messing about on the water and the show’s indoor and outdoor boating lakes allowed everyone to do just that – in miniature.  The boats may have been radio-controlled but visitors found they were just as impressive – and as much fun – as the real thing!

The Railway Hall boasted over thirty new and classic layouts – an enthusiast’s heaven and the place to buy spares, parts, models and accessories.  Judging by the number of boys (big and small) who appeared entranced by the displays it’s clear that the engine driver dream is still alive and kicking – and that Casey Jones still rules!

Budding Jensen Buttons unable to make it to any of the Grand Prix this season came along and picked up some tips from the F1 radio controlled car experts.  World GT, Touring Cars and Mini enthusiasts were well looked after too, and for visitors considering taking up this great hobby the Arrive and Drive feature meant they could have a go before investing.

The 150 plus radio controlled trucks and plant machinery at the show proved to be a huge crowd puller, especially since they do exactly what the real things do in their everyday life – but in 1:14th scale.  All the vehicles had engine sounds and working lights and there was even a custom made roadway complete with road works and traffic lights (but, thankfully, no traffic jams!).

Each year wargaming tournaments take place at the event – and this year was no exception with many battles being fought on each day of the show.  New for 2012 was the fabulous Sci Fi and Memorabilia Zone where favourite characters such as Dr Who and the Daleks were on hand to meet and greet visitors.  Many even had a scary encounter with Darth Maul who dropped into the show from a galaxy far, far away.

Aimed at enthusiasts and families alike there was something for everyone and the 2012 South West Model & Hobby Show once again proved to be a true celebration of life in miniature so make sure you put next years dates in you diary:

            6th – 7th April 2013

Look forward to seeing you next year!
